New Home Style Files

Japandi style is the combination of Scandinavian functionality and Japanese minimalism that creates the perfect blend of function and form, focusing on clean lines, light-filled spaces and muted tones.

With its bright airy spaces, natural materials and soft colour palette, the Wave 22 display home by Beachwood Homes (previously on display) uses the Japandi style to create a tranquil space away from the busy world outside.

Here are some steps to help you create a Japandi haven in your home.

Uncluttered home, uncluttered mind

Japandi interior designMinimalism is the underlying canvas of the Japandi style. A space that is light, bright and clutter-free creates a no-fuss Zen-like experience optimised for relaxation and bliss. Follow the minimalist design principles and add layers through touches of nature, comfort and colour to create this charming fusion of styles. Work the Japandi style into your space and keep it free flowing and airy with lowline furniture and clean lines.

Get in touch with Nature

Japandi design - get in touch with nature

Wood is a key material in the Japandi style. Other natural materials such as bamboo and rattan also play an important part in creating that natural, raw simple beauty.

Another simple way to include more natural elements indoors is to bring in as much natural light as possible, through large windows or glass doors.

You can’t go past leafy green plants to bring the Zen to your indoor Japandi interior. Make sure you extend the use of natural materials such as wicker and rattan to the pots. Or go a step further and create an escape with a botanical background of leafy statement wallpaper!

Colour the space with whites, lights and drama

Japandi - colours

The Japandi colour palette focuses mainly on neutrals to achieve light, bright, and peaceful surrounds. However, this does not mean you have to use white. Pale grey, warms whites and blush pinks are all ingredients of Japanese design that can be used to bring warmth to the clean Scandi aesthetic. Even touches of bold colors and rich deep tones can be used to add a bit of drama and depth - but keep it minimal to maintain balance. A feature wall of rich colour or striking wallpaper is a great way to add contrast and bring a small dose of drama into the neutral space.

Simple accessories with a focus on function and comfort

Japandi Accessroies

Carefully considered accessories are key to creating a beautiful Japandi space, but don’t over do it! The philosophy behind the Japandi trend calls for minimal, functional yet warm and calming decoration without being cluttered and busy. Try some statement vessels and ceramic tableware, functional objects like wooden bowls and trays with interesting utensils. Add warmth and comfort with contrasting cushions and throws in a mix of neutral and bold colours.
